Description
Designed by John Augustus Roebling, the Brooklyn Bridge was the first ever suspension bridge constructed using steel cable. Created to span the East River between New York and Brooklyn it was designed in the in the Gothic Revival style, or neo-Gothic, characterized the segmented arches of its towers. It was constructed between 1869 and 1883. It was an engineering marvel, which was, at 5,989 feet, 50% longer than the longest bridge previously constructed.
