Description
The Sydney Opera House was designed by Danish-born Architect and Pritzker Prize Laureate Jørn Utzon to house the Opera Australia, Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Sydney Theater Company, and the Australian Ballet. The building is perhaps the best known example of Expressionist architecture, a branch of modernism known for its innovative use of materials and unusual shapes. Utzon’s design was chosen out of a field of 233 submissions after three of the four panelists rejected the design, when architect Eero Saarinen, stated that he would not endorse any other design. It was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2007.
