Description
The original Smithsonian Institution building, also known as “The Castle” was designed by Architect James Renwick Jr. The style of the building is Gothic Revival, contains elements of the Norman, Saxon and Romanesque architectural styles. As the Smithsonian was intended to be an institution of learning, the style of the building was chosen to refer to the architecture of the Universities in England (Collegiate Gothic).
