Description
The Fredrick C. Robie House (Robie House) was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and possibly the most well-known of his prairie style homes. This style was developed as an alternative to the neoclassical style that dominated at the time. It is characterized by its emphasis on horizontal elements and flat or hipped roofs with broad eaves to reflect the surrounding flat landscape (organic architecture). The prairie style was the first uniquely American style, emphasizing simplicity and functionality, a concept coined by Frank Lloyd Wright’s mentor, architect Louis Sullivan “Form Follows Function.”
